I just heard about this place today. I'm looking for a place to go on our honeymoon. Here are some qusetions.

Can you drive there, or do you have to take a boat/small plane?
When is the best time to go with cooler weather? We might be getting married in the fall.

Any other sites or info would really help thanks!

There is really not alot to do there on the island, it is very nice to visit once. To stay on the island is very expensive $200-$300 a night. Most people stay in Mackinac city or St. Ignace and then take the ferry to the island and visit for the day.You can only go over to the island from May to early October. The cooler weather times would be May, early June and Sept and Oct.

Some good websites are

I'd like to suggest Munising Michigan it's in the U.P on Lake Superior about a two hour drive from Mackinac you can take a boat tour of the pictured rocks national lakeshore, there is also a glass bottom boat tour of ship wrecks and some waterfalls. There is a lovely hotel called Sunset Motel on the bay I would recommend. Here are some websites

Someone also mentioned Niagara Falls in Canada (but come June you will need a passport) I would recommend that highly also if you've never been. A good hotel there is Crowne Plaza

Mackinac Island is an island in Lake Huron, east of the Mackinaw Bridge. It has a lot of history, most notably the War of 1812 as it was controlled by both Americans and British. There is a historic Fort and cemetery there. It is fairly small, there is a trail for walking or biking all the way around that is about 7 miles. there is some beautiful natural history, ie Arch Rock as well.

The movie Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour was filmed at the Grand Hotel. It is very large, very expensive and very formal. There are other places to stay on the island though, hotels, Bed and Breakfasts, etc.

The downtown area has some great pubs and a lot of souvinier type shops, especially Fudge- thats kind of the signature thing - Mackinaw island Fudge.

Transportation on the island is limited to walking. biking or horse carriage. You can rent bikes cheaply at most of the hotels.

Are you used to cooler weather Michigan style? October, depending, might be too cold for you. The ferries stop running about a week before Halloween. You can take an airplane in the winter, or a snowmobile when the lake freezes. I have not been there in winter, but I hear it is pretty nice because only a few places are open, a few people are there and you see the same people at dinners etc. and get to know them.

The ferries leave from St.Ignace in the UP or Mackinac City in the LP. Both of which you get to by taking I-75 North. Mackinac City has a lot of nice cabins and Band B's and also some more history - Forts, Lighthouse.

You should also head into the UP and see Tahquemenon Falls and whitefish point. They are not too far from the bridge. The Falls are gorgeous and there is a nice brewery at the lower falls. Whitefish Point has a Shipwreck museum.

I would definitely recommend going up there, I have been many times, I was there in October this past year and it was in peak fall color. Amazing. I have a lot of personal photos of the area if you would like to see them just email me.

Make sure to have some Fudge, some Whitefish and some Pasties while you are there. Oh and some Cherry Wine. Gotta have the full taste of Michigan.

The island closes in the fall due to the weather. You can drive to the Straits of Mackinac, but you must take a ferry over to the island. There are no cars allowed on the island. Mostly bikes and carriages are the means of transportation. If you want to go with cooler weather, you'd be best to go at the end of August, or early September. There are several shops and museums and a large hotel to stay in.

I would recommend taking a horse drawn tour of the island. You can go at your own pace, and there are several stops. The food is very good at most places. In the summer, it's very touristy. I would be cautious going in cooler weather as much might not be open. Good luck.

I like Mackinac Island, but it's more of a slower, old fashion place. You can drive there, but you cannot drive on the Island itself, there are bikes, horse-drawn carriages, just no cars (they are trying to preserve it). There is alot of beaches and really nice architechture and nature places. As cliche as this sounds, the place actually moves at a slower, relaxing pace, if you're into that it's a pretty good place. If you want something loud and exciting, I would not suggest it.
