Question:
What do you think of Michigan losing the bid for a Volkswagen plant to Tennessee?

I know Granholm tried, but I do think she tried. I believe the reasons were because of appeal of the south (right to work / non-union TN), UAW Michigan, lack of good enough sale by Michigan for the plant. Feedback please?

I think it has to do with anti union feelings. That will change after the southern worker has a while of working at the companies with no rights and begin to form unions. It would be interesting to see where the anti union bias down south came from, After all many of the workers that formed the UAW came from down south and through the years were some of its biggest supporters. And believe me, If someone is not working hard, its the managements fault, not the Union, Try working an assemble line sometime...

I believe the reason why the Volkswagen plant went to Tennesse instead of Michigan is because the South has a stronger job market than in Michigan. Right now, people from all over the United States are moving to states like Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, and South Carolina. Also, in Tennessee, you are not forced to join a union if you do not want to join one while in Michigan, you are forced to pay union dues to just keep you job. In Michigan, 80% of workers are unionized while in Tennessee, 5% are unionized.

I think it is sad that Michigan lost the bid as they need the work. Chattanooga, TN needs the work too and has a better tax climate than Michigan plus the tri-state TN area has a good worker base and highway system.

sorry you lost the new VW plant. I live near Nashville, and I can tell you that lots and lots of big businesses are relocating here. We also got the new Nissan plant. TN has great tax benefits and just happens to be a terrific state for a company to come to as we also have great people, great climate, and one of the lower costs of living in the country. Come visit sometime... I did 8 years ago, and I've been living here now for 7 years!

Another issue (out of anyone's control) is access to the port. Since many materials will be shipped in from Asia, the closer to a major seaport, the better.

chattanooga has a bigger market

''Chattanooga is an excellent fit for the Volkswagen culture, having an exceptional quality of life and a long manufacturing tradition,''

``adds a significant number of jobs in related sectors.''

The South offers ample highway and rail connections and hundreds of existing suppliers but its main attraction is a pool of workers

I think unions are wasteful. I was in a union once as a factory worker and the abuse was rampant.. With a union, it is hard to be competitive with a workforce (Tennessee) that will WORK for their pay, not just show up, drink, smoke, go home sick, etc... like many union employees do. I think people should earn their employment on merit, integrity, honesty and performance
not this again

As a lifetime MI resident, i am PISSED. We are the #50 state when it comes to jobs!! Granholm should have fought tooth and nail for that bid, I hate that woman....and her ugly wart face!!
