Do you agree with Mayor Bing, and what he's trying to accomplish?

The following is a quote from Dave Bing that I got from Craigs list.

For too long, the wrong things have defined leadership in Detroit. From name recognition to simply holding an elected office and everything in between, leadership has been more than compromised: It has been reduced to an exploitative characteristic.

Because our city faces one of the worst financial, educational and social crises of the past century, the time for pseudo-leadership has passed. Gone must be the days of rhetoric without action, style without substance and promises with no potential.

Too many elected officials have drastically failed to do so, and now we are forced to deal with the consequences and clean up the mess. Yet, no one wants to admit it. Not those who are in positions of power or those who put them there. This goes beyond the scandals that have captured Detroit's headlines of late. Rather, this delves deep into the veins of a community that has been led -- or misled -- by their emotions.

The challenges we face didn't just happen. They have been years in the making, and even contributed to by some who were trusted to resolve those very issues. Many now pretend that simply opposing the tough but necessary changes that we are forced to make somehow indemnifies them from the reality of participation.

City Council members refuse to support this administration's changes to a budget that they approved, but do not reflect today's financial reality. While the chopping block is fair game for city services, council's budget and perks have gone unscathed. Even their own financial specialists have warned them for years that the end was near. Well, now it's here, and some are choosing to entice voters once again with empty words without admitting their mistakes. While I believe employees and citizens understand the crisis we face and imminent changes we must make, they want those changes to have no personal impact.

Union officials have spent more time fueling the fears of their members and citizens than they have at the negotiation table trying to find a solution consistent with the financial realities. They appear more concerned about prospective concessions than the $2 billion pension fund loss realized by their members.

More citizens have turned out to oppose proposed bus route changes than they have to decry the violence that holds our community hostage. Hundreds of people have called my office to complain about these possible changes, while the lack of calls turning in known criminals leaves police lines silent.

This is not only counterproductive for a city with vast untapped potential; it's downright ridiculous. Citizens have every right to be outraged, but that fury is misdirected.

Detroiters deserve answers. They deserve solutions. More important, they deserve real leadership.

Leadership means leading. Not just saying what others want to hear, but what needs to be heard. It is doing those things necessary for the survival of a city we all love -- even if it is unpopular and highly criticized. Our reality is that we simply cannot continue to spend what we do not have.

I'm not only committed to doing what is best and right, I am obligated to those who put their trust in me with their vote.

I recall the adage "Be willing to stand for what you believe, even if you must stand alone." I invite everyone who holds the public's trust to stand with me in making this city stronger, even if that means sacrifice -- personal or otherwise.

And while this isn't meant to be a personal attack, only those guilty need be offended.

Dave Bing, Mayor of Detroit.

I am glad that the people of Detroit woke up after the Kwame Kilpatrick scandal and elected a leader who was not related to either Coleman Young and/or to Kwame Kilpatrick, two men who have destroyed Detroit. Dave Bing realizes that Detroit needs to make cutbacks and has to stop wasting money it does not have on things it does not need. Bing is bringing both honor and dignity to the role of mayor for the City of Detroit and although he has a long way to go, I am confident that Mayor Bing will do his part to make Detroit a viable and great city once again.

Well, this is all well said but, will it be done is the question. Now, I've been gone from Detroit for 19yrs. but, I still hold it dear to my heart. Over the years of my visits it's been sad to see how much it's gone downhill. Some areas they are renovating with hopes that it will bring some life back to the city. There's a number of things that have gone wrong. Sure, a great deal of the blame is put on the politicians. They haven't helped the matter they've been big part of the problem. What part of "Public Service" do they not understand. These jackass' that are a bunch of power hungry, selfish, greedy, lazy good for nothing politicians should be booted out. Forget about their length of stay. They're just sitting around taking up space. Another thing is all these thuggs! Quit bullying people there. Damn, a good citizen can't even have a decent neighborhood to live in or raise their families anymore. The elderly can't afford to leave nor do they want to. They just try to get along and survive. The Economy has to play a part as well. The main thing that seems to keep the city afloat is the Film industry, Sports Teams, Colleges/Universities, maybe even the Casinos. Detroit is a great city with a lot to offer as well as potential to get back to what it once was. I'd love to see more renovations to some abandoned buildings. There's so much to blame for what has gone on there. It didn't happen overnight it certainly won't be fixed overnight.

I wish nothing but the best to the citizens and to those politicians that do know the meaning of "Public Service, Public Official" these people intrusted in you to do a honest and decent job. They're not expecting miracles but the city is long overdue for one or two miracles.

I have, and I really like it! People need to try it, and not use their own prejudice against a search engine they're not used to. Here's why I like it: 1. Homepage is always something interesting - The homepage has a daily background that's usually nice to look at, and the little Hotspots on the background have some cool tidbits you can search with. Also, if you're not interested in that, the search box loads up first and the fastest. In my opinion (IMO), Google's page is just too bland. 2. Web results are more convenient - I like some of the Instant Answers that Bing comes up with. Like if it's a very popular site, it will be the first results, and some important links (within the site) will be listed underneath. Sometimes even a search box will appear under the result so you can search within that site. Sometimes relevant news articles show up, weather, traffic data, etc. Also you can hover over a result, and a little thing will show up on the right of it that will show you a text preview of how the query relates to the site. IMO, most of the times, I just get a boring list of links from Google that doesn't always help me narrow my search down. 3. Superb image search - There's infinite scroll, so you don't have to click extra pages to find better images. It's a clean results page, and you can hover over a thumbnail for extra info., and there are some really great filters so you can a more exact image. You can even create a collection of images you like by dragging them to the Scratchpad so you can look at all the ones you like when you're finished. IMO, I'm not always satisfied easily with the first page of images, and it's tiring of clicking and clicking to go to the next page to see pics on Google's image search. 4. Awesome video search - Bing has to be the best on the web. The neat thing about Bing's is that you can hover over a thumbnail and it will play a preview of the video, so you don't have to "guess and click" a result, and find that you wasted your time. Also, it searches many video sites and regular sites. IMO, Google's video search usually index YouTube and Google Video way too often, and I often click to see a video I do not want. 5. Shopping is better on Bing - You can find a LOT of good deals, because there is something called Cashback and you can get a percentage of the regular price paid back to you, depending on what store you buy from. It's like a rebate, but online and with definitely more certainty. Also, each product has user reviews and specs/features that are really handy to look at. IMO, Google's is just OK. There's a lot of other things, but that's what I mainly use Bing and Google for. I think I'm going to be sticking with Bing. I know a lot of people who really don't want to switch from Google, because it's just become a habit. I feel sorry if you can't wean off the habit, but it never hurts to try something new.

Its not going to go over well at all but he needs to cut costs at all costs. Detroit has ignored these problems for so long that small cuts wont help.

About the only thing I wouldn't cut is police and whats left of the fire dept. Everybody else has to chip in to help save.

people lead by example

the communities are held hostage by violence?

he is over exaggerating..

he's blowing a lot of hot air ( which is what a "good" politician does )
